The raw data collected during decennial censuses are counts -whole numbers that represent people and housing units. The Census Bureau aggregates counts to geographic areas such as counties, tracts, block groups, and blocks, and reports the aggregate totals. In other cases, summary measures, such as averages and medians, are reported. Although the American Community Survey (ACS) produces population, demographic and housing unit estimates, for 2010, the 2010 Census provides the official counts of the population and housing units for the nation, states, counties, cities and towns. For 2006 to 2009, the Population Estimates Pennsylvania has a population of 12.8 million people, making it the 5th most populous state in the nation. The most populated city and the only one in the state with a population exceeding 1 million is Philadelphia, which has a population of over 1.5 million.The state has two cities with populations of more than 100,000: Pittsburgh with 304,391 inhabitants and Allentown with 120,207 inhabitants.
